A 50-year-old woman presents with right facial pain. A 1 cm right parotid mass is detected by CT. The nodule is difficult to detect by palpation. An FNA of the right parotid mass was performed in the office.
Benign, non-neoplastic salivary gland elements only. See note.
Note: Clinical and radiologic correlations are needed since the FNA findings do not explain the presence of discrete mass. Repeat FNA or tissue biopsy under radiologic guidance may be useful.
The patient had a CT-guided tissue biopsy that revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma.
A radical parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice was performed.
